Christchurch
Lyttelton serves as the cruise port for Christchurch, located approximately 12 kilometers (about 7.5 miles) southeast of the city. Your ship will dock at the Lyttelton Inner Harbor, utilizing a new $56 million cruise ship berth completed in 2020. Lyttelton is a historic port town, rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake, set within a beautiful scenic harbor that was once a volcanic crater.
For security reasons, passengers are not permitted to walk directly out of the port area. The local port authority provides a complimentary shuttle service from the passenger terminal to the i-SITE Information Center in Lyttelton town center.
Getting Around from the Port
From Ship to Lyttelton Town:
- Port Authority Shuttle: A free shuttle is provided by the local port authority from the passenger terminal to the i-SITE Information Center in Lyttelton town center. From there, Lyttelton's town center is within walking distance.
- Ship Shuttle: Many cruise lines also provide a free shuttle from the ship to the south side of Norwich Quay in Lyttelton. This is a convenient spot to meet friends, join pre-booked local tours, or walk into the township. The return shuttle to the ship departs from the north side of Norwich Quay.
From Lyttelton to Christchurch City:
- Cruise Line Shuttle: Cruise lines typically offer a shuttle service from ship-side directly to Christchurch city, usually dropping passengers at the Bridge of Remembrance on Cashel Street. This service is generally "affordable," costing no more than NZD 15, and the journey takes about 25 minutes. Be sure to ask the outbound shuttle driver for the time of the last return shuttle.
- Local Bus: For an independent option, local buses depart from the south side of Norwich Quay in Lyttelton. Metro staff will be present at the shuttle stop to sell NZD 10 day tickets, valid for the entire bus network. These can be purchased with credit cards, EFTPOS, or NZ cash. While on the bus, only NZ cash or a local travel card is accepted for single fares, so the day ticket is the best option.
- Specific bus route #8 Special will take you to the Christchurch bus exchange.
- The standard #8 bus also goes to the bus exchange and continues to the airport, passing the International Antarctic Centre.
- The bus journey to Christchurch takes approximately one hour.
- Important: Local buses cannot take you directly to your ship. You must use the shuttle service (either port authority or cruise line) to return to the ship from Norwich Quay.
Attractions and Activities
In Lyttelton (Walkable from Shuttle Drop-off):
- Explore Historic Lyttelton: Wander through the town's steep streets, admiring the wooden houses and several 19th-century churches.
- Bridle Path Trail: For keen walkers, a portion of the historic Bridle Path, used by early Canterbury pilgrims, offers scenic views. The full hike to Christchurch is longer than your port time, but you can experience a part of it.
- Harbor Views: Enjoy the stunning scenery of Lyttelton Harbor, a sea-filled volcanic crater with three fascinating islands: Quail, Ripapa, and King Billy.
In Christchurch (25-minute shuttle/1-hour bus from Lyttelton):
- Christchurch City Centre: Known as the "Garden City" and "most English city outside England," Christchurch offers a relaxed ambiance. Explore the rebuilt areas around Cashel Mall and the river.
- Botanic Gardens: Considered among the finest in New Zealand, these gardens are a highlight with formal flower beds and the meandering Avon River.

Lyttelton: Shopping options in Lyttelton are limited to a few local shops, and you'll find some coffee places for refreshments.
Christchurch: Christchurch offers extensive shopping and dining. The main shopping areas are located along the river and at Cashel Mall, conveniently close to Cathedral Square. Cruise line shuttles typically drop passengers on Cashel Street, providing easy access to these newly rebuilt areas. The Arts Centre is an excellent place to find unique local crafts and souvenirs, including pottery, bone carvings, pewter, sculptures, and jewelry.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). The conversion rate is approximately US$1 = NZD 1.30. Major credit cards are widely accepted. Automatic teller machines (ATMs), known locally as 'the hole in the wall,' are readily available in most towns. While a few traders, especially in tourist areas, may accept foreign currency, it's best to use NZD.
English is universally spoken. The emergency telephone number in New Zealand is 111. Free Wi-Fi may be available at some Starbucks and McDonald's, and many public libraries offer internet access, often for a charge.
